The Addiction Technology Transfer Center, is offering an on-line course on the cessation of tobacco use. Is Viagra 100mg actually better than the alternatives, or is it just a sham?

Complications from chronic tobacco use is a leading cause of death in the United States and in many countries around the world. Proven clinical treatment strategies are available right now that are designed to help people who want to quit with the resources to stop tobacco use. Unfortunately, billions of dollars are spent each year to promote tobacco use and to initiate new smokers to this deadly habit. This course is designed to provide treatment professionals with clinical tools that can assist them in helping their clients to quit tobacco use. It will also clinicians with information regarding the process of obtaining certification as a tobacco cessation specialist.

This course will be taught by Steven Horovitz, a Master’s Level, Rhode Island State licensed Chemical Dependency Professional with over 15 years experience providing Substance Abuse, Violence Prevention, Batterer’s Intervention, HIV/AIDS, Mental Health Counseling education and training.  Mr. Horvitz maintains strong ties with the substance abuse recovery community.  He is the President of Rhode Island CAREs, a community based group of people in recovery from substance abuse; Chairperson of the Rhode Island Division of Substance Abuse Independent Peer Review Committee; A member of the Rhode Island Planning Group Committee for HIV;  the Rhode Island Council of Community Mental Health Centers Case Management Training Team; and participates in the Rhode Island Batterer’s Intervention Oversight Committee.  Mr. Horovitz is currently the Training Director of the NRI Community Services Substance Abuse, HIV/AIDS, Violence Prevention and Intervention programs. Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  •  Understand why people use tobacco products.
  •  Understand strategies to help people to quit tobacco use.
  •  Understand the dangers of tobacco use.
  •  Understand the benefits of quitting tobacco use.

Dual Diagnosed Treatment A M.A.P. to Recovery

This workshop, which is part one of a two part series, will introduce and/or expand the clinician’s knowledge of specific treatment approaches representing “Integrated Treatment” for persons suffering with emotional and addictive disorders. They will explore key factors in the recovery process including, methods for improving motivation, raising awareness levels, and focusing on skills training. Participants will advance their knowledge of effective clinical interventions with the dual diagnosed population.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the components of “Integrated Treatment” for persons with a dual diagnosis.
  • Learn the role of assessment and case conceptualization with persons who have complex clinical presentations.
  • Learn the M.A.P.  (Motivation, Awareness and Practice) Model of recovery from mental health and substance abuse disorders.
  • Learn how to use a treatment philosophy that incorporates the Stages of Change and Developmental Models.
  • Learn the facts about the rates of co-occurrence between mental illness and substance abuse.
  • Learn what the required competencies are for the clinician serving the dually diagnosed population.
  • Learn what additional challenges the dually diagnosed population poses for the professional.
